Bruges: Swans, Chocolate and Jesus

A city of medieval charm, sweet delights, and sacred wonders

Traveling during the holidays has always been my way of finding peace and joy in a season that can feel heavy because of decades without my family. In December 2023, I found myself drawn to Bruges, Belgium—a place I first fell in love with after watching the Hallmark movie Love, Romance, and Chocolate. While a movie might seem like a whimsical inspiration for travel, Bruges exceeded all expectations. Its medieval charm, rich history, and heartwarming hospitality made it feel like stepping into a fairytale.

Arrival in Bruges

After a direct flight from Chicago to Brussels, I took a scenic one-hour train ride to Bruges. Nestled northwest of the capital, this small city felt like a hidden gem. My home base was Hotel Biskajer, an adults-only boutique hotel that was as cozy and welcoming as it was beautiful.

Caroline and Nicole, the incredible hosts and multi-lingual geniuses, greeted me with warmth and went above and beyond to make my stay special… even with chats while they were folding laundry and I was drinking Anna Cava.🥂 They shared their favorite local spots, recommended restaurants, and even told me about Bruges' legendary swans and the nightly canal light show—a magical experience I enjoyed twice during my stay.

The Legend of the Swans

Bruges is often called the “Venice of the North,” and its canals are home to graceful swans that hold a deep historical significance. According to legend, the swans symbolize wealth and power, and their presence dates back to the 1400s. Seeing them illuminated at night on the canals felt like stepping into a dream.

Indulging in Belgian Chocolate

Belgium is synonymous with chocolate, and Bruges does not disappoint. With over 2,000 chocolate shops across the country, I decided to visit Chocolatier Dumon, a family-owned gem where handmade chocolates have been crafted since 1992 and where they still create these decadent treats daily. Their chocolate was so good that I picked up a box to savor later.

Where to Eat in Bruges

After grabbing some chocolate, I asked them for a local eating recommendation, and the chocolatier personally walked me to Tasty Sandwich Shop. Their veggie sandwich was so delicious that I returned the next day for another!

Other favorites included:

  • De Schilder: Tapas and wine in a charming spot near my hotel. The waiter spoke eight languages! Learn more

  • Tom Pouce: Located right on the square near the Basilica of the Holy Blood, this spot offers great food with an unbeatable view of Bruges’ historic architecture. Check them out

The Basilica of the Holy Blood

The highlight of my trip was visiting the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a spiritual and architectural treasure. Dating back to the 12th century, this basilica is home to a sacred relic believed to contain a cloth used by Joseph of Arimathea to clean Jesus’ body after the crucifixion.

As I entered the chapel, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace, humility, and awe. The intricate details, the quiet reverence of other visitors, and the history within those walls made this visit unforgettable. If you visit between 2p-4p, you will have your own personal time with the relic, which I did. That moment, to this day, is one of the most powerful and emotional of my life. ✝️💜
